Practicing Mercy

May 25th, 2008 · 3 Comments

One of the main Christian beliefs is in the act of mercy. We like to receive it but we don’t always practice it well. I got an opportunity to practice it Thursday on my way home from work. (Silas Bishop might not want to read this!)

I was leaving church (via Attingham) to go home. I got onto the feeder (that goes to Gessner) and then tried to get over to the far left lane so I could take the u-turn underpass thingy to get to the other side and get on the highway. As I was in the process of changing lanes, with my blinker on, I noticed the car behind me was getting closer and closer. About the time I got most of the way over into the lane I realize he’s getting real close, he’s not stopping, he’s really close, oh man he’s not stopping, BAM! He hits my back left bumper. In traffic, right at the busy part where the entrance ramp to I-10 is across from Goode Company, and lots of rush hour cars.

So I sort of pull over into the space between the entrance ramp and the lane I’m in (you know…that space with all the lines) to look at my car. And what do I see but my back left bumper partly detached. He asks if we want to get off the street somewhere so we pull into the Goode Company parking lot and I get out. He’s talking in Spanish on the phone for a while so I decided to check out my bumper.

It seems Honda not only makes good cars with good gas mileage, they make them like lego’s. As I started looking around at my bumper I realize that the side has really just sort of…snapped off and that I can probably put it back myself. So I did. I just put it back into position and snapped it all back on with a few hard punches. All that was left was a small dent/gash in the bumper (the picture below). Rather than make the guy, and myself for that matter, go to all the trouble to fix it I decided to just not worry about it. So Silas Bishop…sorry about some guy hitting your old/my new car. I know it pains you deeply!

Ugh, I slightly cringe at this Cliff, as I have known ppl that have done the good thing and not wanted to drag it through insurance hell, later to develop some genuine physical ailments or the damage turns out to be worse than originally thought. Be careful because Houston traffic stinks, and ALWAYS get their info…just in case!

It’s ok. He didn’t hit me hard. We weren’t going that fast. It wasn’t near as bad as the one that hit me two weeks ago (and my car is in the shop now).
