A couple weeks ago our church had a “The Doorpost Songs Live” concert. The song you are listening to (if you clicked play above) is from the CD. The Dorpost Songs is a CD the church made last year. It stemmed from the children learning and memorizing scripture. Here is the story:
While discussing the verse for VBS David Ray, the contemporary worship leader here at church and (in my opinion) a Modern Day Psalmist, remembered a “cheesy” song from childhood that was about tha scripture passage. Dave says -
When I was a child, I remember listening to a radio program and hearing a song that set the words of Joshua 1:9 to a simple, memorable melody. Though I only heard it once, since that day I have been able to quote Joshua 1:0 as easily as John 3:16.
After VBS he and the Children’s Minister began talking. Each month there are scriptures for the children to memorize. They decided to try to put the verses to music. David Ray then took the verses and put them to music.
Long after we forget particular events from our past we can still sing the songs we heard along the way. What better way is there, then, to pass on the hallmark truths of our faith than through music? /// The Doorpost Songs is a collection of timeless truths from Scripture set to music. Occasionally words have been shaped to aid the lyrical flow of the songs, or to make a concept easier for children to understand, but the vast majority of the text is taken straight from the Bible. These songs tell just a small part of a much bigger story - the story of a redeeming God communicating His love to all of humanity, and they help us to live this story as our own.
Today that hard work is shown in “The Doorposts” CD. Now I must admit, when I first heard about a children’s CD the church had put together it didn’t exactly get me real excited to go listen to it. Some children sitting around singing “this little light of mine” didn’t exactly move me. I figured I would listen to it at some point, but only because it was made by and from the church I am on staff at. And honestly that is the same reason I went to the concert a couple weeks ago. And man am I glad I went to the concert.
I Have Hidden Your Word in My Heart - Psalm 119:9-11
I was absolutely overwhelmed. Not only were the songs wonderful/great/astonishing/good, but they led me to God. I’ve often times read a psalm and wondered how you could sing it. I’ve tried to several times and I could never ever do it. I like to think that it just was praise and singing not so much a good sounding song. Then David Ray the Modern Day Psalmist comes along and blows my mind. Here is scripture, psalms included, that sounds great. Not only that, I can remember the songs and therefore the scripture (memorizing permanently is a problem for me). And it wasn’t just a bunch of kids sitting around singing. There were kids yes and the entire contemporary worship band including David and his wife.
So basically I’m sayin it ROCKED. There were lights and all kinds of cool things. The whole time I was just sitting there amazed and astonished at the music. So to Dave, my modern day psalmist, I thank you!

I agree. At first I wasn’t that intrigued about kids singing on a CD but it is so sweet and the songs are really catchy and good. We fight over the CD :)
